Topic - Gift of Diverse Kinds of Tongues

Father we thank you for today and for the lives of everyone in this community. Thank you God for the opportunity to learn at your feet again and ask that you give us the grace to understand all that is being said so we can put to practice in our daily lives. Amen

Topic for this evening is Gift of Diverse kinds of tongues.

The Key Passage and Bible reference will be  - 1 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭10‬ ‭KJV‬‬ “to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:”

What is the gift of diverse kinds of tongues?

One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit that gives a believer the ability to communicate directly with God or pass a message to another believer . This language is sometimes not understood by the speaker and it is never learned. Linguistics ability is not a criterion as it is not an earthly language.

Because it is called divers kinds of tongues, that is, different or diverse kinds of tongues, occasionally someone present may know the tongue which is spoken by another.  However, this will not always be the case.  Sometimes the diverse tongue is absolutely unknown to man.  Sometimes the believer is speaking with heavenly languages because in another scripture we read, “…No man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries”  1 Corinthians 14:2.  But, thank God, God understand

Kinds of tongues here is not speaking about different languages known to the speaker but talking about different kinds of prayers . let’s try and relate different kinds of tongues to different kinds of praying.

1 Timothy‬ ‭2‬:‭1‬ ‭KJV‬‬ “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;” was Paul showing us a specific order - Remember the Lord’s Prayer as well yeah showing us an order to pray as well

For instance we launch a prayer session now in the group and we start praying a prayer of thanksgiving and someone in the group is given a tongue of praise. When you hear it, you know there is a human spirit adoring, exalting, worshiping God. It’s thrilling. What happens? It liberates the group. We all begin to join in praise and worship. The purpose of that particular tongue at that time is lead the whole group into worship and praise and that has fulfilled its purpose without interpretation

Let us use another instance of prayer for a situation or someone and we are not sure how to go about the prayer to meet the need of the situation or person. An intercessory tongue will be given to someone or people by the Holy Spirit and it can direct the group to pray aright or needs met

One of the power of praying in tongues is all pronunciation difficulty fly away, like it cannot be found.

 Alright let’s swing back to today’s topic 

Sometimes this tongue could come like a roar, some sort of anger like a river carrying away debris. This could be the Holy Spirit against the presence and operation of the devil . The Holy Spirit can see behind the scenes of it all. Some situations may need interpretation to understand that is a tongue for rebuke while others don’t. There are some tongues that need interpretations to the lingua Franca of the group present and an example is exhortation.

Please note there is a difference in baptism of the Holy Spirit of speaking in tongues and the gifts of kinds of tongues- one speaks more about private communion with God and the other as a church - who can guess which is which here ?

Kinds of tongues is to edify and bless one another and the other . Our aim is not only to communicate with God but also other believers

I will leave you to meditate on this:

Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.”

An important and Closing note from me to you today:

The gift of Holy Spirit are given as he chooses “‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭11‬ ‭KJV‬‬ but all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.” but ensure you have the fruit of the Holy Spirit and one the greatest is Love “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.”

Please remember do not desire these gifts for our own recognition, but to know God more deeply and to serve others faithfully
